A blast from the past Claudio Cannigia has given his verdict on why he didn’t get to play for Argentina at the World Cup back in 2002 and according to the former striker it was down to ‘F***ing Chris Sutton’.

The player was taken to the World Cup with his country but due to a challenge from Chris Sutton who was playing as a defender for the club in the 2002 Scottish Cup Final he played no part in the competition.

Speaking to Sunsport the former Dundee man bemoaned his luck:

“F***ing Sutton! He was a striker!

“I have no idea why he was playing as a centre-half.

“I thought I would make it. But I was not fit for the first game, then the second one…”

Chris Sutton would become a utility man for Celtic under Martin O’Neill at times with the striker doing a job for the bhoys in defence and midfield if Martin needed someone to fill in.

Of course, the BT Pundit was much better playing up top and tormented many Ibrox defenders in his day.
