Midfielder Kwon Hyeok-kyu has been practically frozen out at Celtic since joining the club in the summer. The 22-year-old is yet to play a competitive minute for the Hoops.

He was, however, called up for South Korea’s under-23s this international break. The team took on France under-23s in a friendly in preparation for the Olympic Games which take place next summer.

Away in Le Havre, South Korea walked away with a hugely impressive 3-0 victory. All of their goals came in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Kwon didn’t start in this one, although he did gain a spot on the bench. He is clearly still thought of in some regard in South Korea because despite barely playing for his club, he managed to earn a call-up to the under-23s.

His situation at Celtic remains an intriguing one. Although there are several players ahead of him in the pecking order, one may have thought the 22-year-old would have made his competitive debut by now.

There have been no reports of injury troubles for Kwon. Perhaps Brendan Rodgers simply doesn’t rate the midfielder.
