Former Celtic defender Leo Hjelde is on the brink of sealing a move to Sunderland.
The Norwegian defender’s time at Leeds United is drawing to a close, two years after his departure from Celtic.
Hjelde, who joined Celtic from Rosenburg in July 2019, was initially loaned to Ross County, where his performances quickly drew attention. His abilities led to comparisons with Virgil van Dijk, from ex-Celtic player John Hughes.
Leeds United snapped up Hjelde in August 2021, amidst a wave of young talent leaving Celtic under Neil Lennon’s management. The departure was seen as a missed opportunity for Celtic, who was undergoing a managerial change and could have used a promising defender like Hjelde.
Sunderland, managed by Michael Beale, who had a stint at Rangers until he was sacked earlier this season, has reportedly agreed to a £2 million fee for Hjelde’s transfer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The young Norwegian has also accepted Sunderland’s contract proposal, paving the way for his move to the Stadium of Light.
