Former Liverpool star and Irish international Jason McAteer has confessed his love for Celtic as he gets set to play a charity match at Ibrox next month.

The ex-pro admitted he’s opened himself up to a lot of stick when he takes to the field for the charity game but he’ll be in the red of Liverpool for the tie.

“I know I’m sitting here at Ibrox – but I always wanted to play for Celtic.” McAteer told RecordSport.

“Obviously there’s the Irish connection, being a Celtic fan. Sorry! Kenny Dalglish was my hero from his Celtic and then Liverpool days.

“I was at Celtic for a charity game not so long ago, which was great. It will be nice to come to Ibrox, because I’ve never been here.

“And I’ve just guaranteed myself a load of stick!”

He won’t be the first guy who said he supported Celtic then turned up at Ibrox one day – Stevie G leads the way in that respect.

Celtic have an array of former footballers and celebrities who have a soft spot for the Hoops from Rod Stewart to the President of Albania. The club captures the imagination of many people the world over.

The Irish connection a big deal for McAteer who admits to supporting Kenny Dalglish at Celtic before his Liverpool days.

Jason would’ve enjoyed watching Celtic beat his pal Stevie’s team at Ibrox at the start of September and maybe he can try to emulate Jonny Hayes as another flying Irishman at Ibrox.
