DARREN BENT claims he got a phone call from Neil Lennon after he spoke about the Celtic manager in Soccer AM. The former Villa striker told Soccer AM he would rather work under a new manager like Steven Gerrard rather than an old school manager like Neil Lennon.

This must have been around the time he and his agent was trying to punt his services to either side of the Glasgow divide.

Apparently, Neil called Darren up to clarify a few things and let him know about Scottish football.

The striker spoke of receiving the call and thinking he could have been getting a Parkhead move. Instead, he got a lecture for his troubles.

“I got a phone call and someone said ‘Neil Lennon wants your phone number, do you mind?’” Bent explained to RecordSport.

“I was like, ‘no’ but even then I didn’t know what was coming.  At first I’m thinking, I wonder if I’m going to get a move to Celtic, here.

“He just wanted me to clarify my comments. What I meant by saying like an old school-type manager was that he’d been managing longer than Steven Gerrard and that Steven Gerrard was on the way up.

“He was asking me what my thoughts were and he was trying to fill me in on Celtic and Scottish football.

“I wasn’t disrespectful to him I just said what I thought about playing for him or Steven Gerrard.”

Old school Neil Lennon managed to tactically outclass new boss Steven Gerrard at Ibrox on Sunday by making his side look very poor.

This is the second time this week we’ve heard of a manager phoning up a pundit with Kris Boyd claiming he got it in the neck for Brendan Rodgers for praising Lennon’s direct style and saying it was better than Rodgers.
