Mark Wilson, former Celtic right-back, has voiced significant concerns over the depth of the squad, especially noticeable in the aftermath of their recent 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock. Wilson, in his analysis, pointed out a distinct drop in performance when key players are missing.

He shared his insights with Sky Sports, stating, “That’s both Sundays they’ve looked a bit shaky with poor performances.”

The defeat at Rugby Park, according to Wilson, was a clear indicator of the problem. He emphasised, “The second half was as poor as I can remember from a Celtic side for a long time.

“A real lack of cohesion in and out of possession. They were rightly punished for it.”

Wilson’s critique underlines the team’s struggles in the absence of influential players like Hatate and Abada, but he also noted that manager Brendan Rodgers doesn’t use this as an excuse.

The discussion turned to the absence of American defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, which Wilson believes significantly weakens the team’s backline. He praised Carter-Vickers, saying, “Carter-Vickers is head and shoulders the best defender at the club. There’s a calmness about him that he brings to the rest.”

Wilson challenged the likes of Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke to rise to the occasion, though he expressed reservations about their ability to do so effectively.

Wilson also highlighted the urgency for Celtic to enhance the squad. “It’s glaringly obvious that the backup act to the starting XI is nowhere near good enough to come in and take those spots and create real competition,” he asserted. This statement from Wilson encapsulates the pressing need for Celtic to strengthen their ranks in the upcoming transfer window.

Can Rodgers get the players in he wants while moving some of the deadwood out? Fans are sceptical.
