Celtic were close to offloading Chris Jullien a few weeks ago, but his move to Schalke fell through after personal terms couldn’t be agreed upon.

Since the move fell through, he’s been heavily involved in Ange’s pre-season teams after Carl Starfelt’s injury has ruled him out for the preparations for Celtic’s title defence.

The manager has stated the decision on the player’s future lies in Jullien’s hands, however, McAvennie doesn’t believe that he’s showing he wants to stay at Celtic, especially after his performance against Rapid Vienna at the weekend. [Football Transfer Tavern]

Jullien’s not going to get a game, it’s obvious. He’s had his chance in the first team.

“The manager said it’s down to Jullien whether to leave but he’s got to step up if he wants to stay. In the preseason games he’s got to prove that he wants to stay there. He’s got to prove to the manager that he wants to stay there. By all accounts in the game (vs Vienna) he didn’t.

“I know it’s all about fitness but if you’ve been out the team for two years, you’re wanting to prove a point. There’s players that need to go out, [Karamoko] Dembele was one of the players that had to go and I think there’s a few more.”

Celtic’s Defensive Situation

It seems that Stephen Welsh is still above Chris Jullien in the pecking order. It’s a sad sight to see, considering how good the French defender has been for Celtic.

Stephen Welsh is good to have in the squad as an emergency backup, but he’s not good enough to play a bigger role in the Celtic squad.

It’s good to see that Bosun Lawal has been getting his chance in pre-season, Ange clearly has high hopes for the defender, but will he be able to move up the pecking order and make an impact on the Celtic squad this season.
