Celtic supporters are known for their continual backing of the oppressed. In the Middle East, the plight of the Palestinian people has resonated with many fans of the club.

Due to this, at matches, Palestine flags can be seen being waved regularly. Some, though, have found an issue with this.

UEFA in particular don’t like involving politics in football despite the fact matches are one of the few occasions in which the oppressed in society have the opportunity to display their views, points, and opinions on a notable scale.

Football and politics go hand in hand, and a prime example of this is Humza Yousaf and Celtic. The current First Minister of Scotland has never hidden his love for the club, and he recently spoke about his fellow supporters’ backing for the Palestinian cause.

First Minister Humza Yousaf

Appearing on ‘The Rest is Politics’ podcast, Yousaf outlined his opinions on the matter: “In terms of the waving of flags, to me, first of all, it’s barely the most important issue in the Israel/Gaza (conflict)”, he said.

“My general impression has been, look, if people want to show solidarity by waving flags, we should let them just wave flags, but it’s up to the club what it decides to do.”

It is strange to think that some people have an issue with supporters simply waving a certain flag at a football match. It isn’t negatively impacting anyone, and in the Palestinian case, it is showing solidarity for a cause that otherwise gets overlooked.

  1. It was flying a Hamas flag that got the GB rightly banned, not flying Palestine flags. Support the oppressed, not the clowns that help keep them that way.
