Brighton assistant manager Billy Reid believes Celtic have pulled off a ‘coup’ in signing Shane Duffy

Speaking to the Daily Record, Reid revealed that Duffy is still a player in his ‘prime’ and the Hoops have managed to pick up an ‘unbelievable talent’

“Shane is a massive character in the dressing-room and I think it’s a coup for Celtic to get him. Celtic have got an absolute winner. He’s a beast in both boxes and he’ll cause mayhem up in Scotland

He’s a monster of a centre-back and I genuinely expect him to overpower people up in Scotland. He attacks the ball really well in both boxes and can head it for miles. He could be a colossus for Celtic this season. Listen, Duffy is a Premier League player.

This isn’t a guy who’s on his last legs – he’s 28 and in his prime. It’s an incredible signing for Celtic. In terms of standard of player, he’s above the Scottish Premiership. He’ll be above the level of player up in Scotland.”

Many fans were delighted by the signing of the Irishman last week, as he seems to be the strong and dominant central defender that Celtic are missing

It was thought that Duffy himself was the one to push this deal through, after interest from Premier League clubs such as West Ham and West Brom.

We were able to catch a glimpse on Thursday night of Duffy, when he captained his national side to a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria, scoring in the 93rd minute to level it up.

Graham Potter’s current assistant is also a former Hamilton Accies manager, so he will know in some form what standard it takes to be a quality player in Scotland

Coming from a man who has watched him every day in training, like Reid has, these comments are very encouraging. By all accounts he could have continued to play at one of the highest levels in world football comfortably.

However, instead he has chosen to join up with Neil Lennon and his squad to play for his boyhood heroes
