Former Celtic right back Jackie McNamara believes there should be away fans at Glasgow derbies and that it adds to the atmosphere within the stadium whilst encouraging players to improve their game.

The Hoops icon says he is a ‘traditionalist’ and that having away fans gives visitors an extra man (Daily Record):

“I’m a traditionalist. I think you should have the away fans.

“Again it’s just the energy in the stadium. When the fans were on your side, it felt like a 12th man.

“You know you have got to raise your standards. You know they want you to be on the front foot as there’s a lot at stake in it. You don’t want to let people down.”

The debate whether or not away fans should be at derbies has certainly split opinion. McNamara is undoubtedly for it however this Saturday, Parkhead will be filled with strictly Celtic fans.

And going into the game, McNamara believes Ange Postecoglou and Celtic will go all out to attack their city rivals:

“I don’t think Ange will play for a draw! He won’t change his philosophy or what he believes in.

“He’ll go out to attack and win the match. It doesn’t matter who he is playing – whether it’s Real Madrid or Rangers – he’ll go about it the same way.”

It is certain the Bhoys will set their attacking stall out from the beginning at the weekend. They will look to get on top of their opponents in the opening stages and try and get an early goal, something that has been relatively common in recent derbies at Celtic Park.

And should the Hoops strike early doors, it could may well spur them on to victory with McNamara claiming Celtic’s form is of a top standard at the minute:

“Celtic have a real momentum right now. They’ve been relentless, even when they are not at their best.”

Hoops supporters will be hoping this never stop mentality is carried on into Saturday’s clash. Postecoglou will definitely have it drilled into the players’ minds as they look to make it three from four in derbies this season so far.
