Brendan Rodgers was appointed the new manager of Celtic at the beginning of the week and as can be imagined, reaction to his return has been widespread.

Fans, players and pundits alike have all poured out their thoughts on Rodgers’ return to Glasgow, the latest being ex-Celt Jackson Irvine.

The midfielder, who now plies his trade with St. Pauli in Germany, heavily praised the appointment. Irvine said (Sky Sports News via Glasgow Times):

“It’s a great appointment. He has the emotional connection to the club which is so important at a club like that. He needs to really understands the fans and the city.”

‘Knowing the city’ is a phrase familiar with many Celtic fans and it certainly applies in Rodgers’ case.

He undoubtedly knows the demands faced at a club like Celtic and that he needs to keep improving the team. This is something Irvine touched on:

“The big challenge for him now will be maintaining the dominance in the league and trying to then push those performances into Champions League success and seeing the club in those knockout stages where they have been in the past.”

European progress is at the forefront of every Celtic fans’ mind and they will be hoping Rodgers can provide them with it second time around.

The champions certainly have the squad to help them do well on the continent and here’s hoping what’s on paper can be put into reality sooner rather than later.
