Celtic’s latest midfield recruit James McCarthy has given fans an update on when they should see him catch up to full fitness as he expressed his delight at making his debut for his boyhood heroes.

As quoted by Sun Sport, speaking to Celtic TV, the Irishman insisted that he wasn’t far away from getting back to full fitness after achieving a lifelong dream by playing for the Hoops against Hearts on Sunday.

“It’s a dream come true. I’ve said that from when I joined the club, it’s been a massive thing for me and the family.

“I’ve always wanted to play for Celtic, and coming out, and the reception I got, it’s one you dream of as a kid, and I’m delighted to be a part of it now, as I need to make sure the hard work continues now.

“The most important thing was getting through to the next round of the cup, and we’ve done that.

“Obviously, it was nice to get some minutes for myself, with me not doing pre-season with all of the lads, so I’m still doing a wee bit of catch-up, but I’m getting there now.

“I’m definitely not far away, and, as I said, the most important thing now is that we are through to the next round of the cup, and we are looking forward to the next challenge during the week.”

James McCarthy’s move to Celtic is one that has been on the cards for several years.

The former Everton and Crystal Palace midfielder has been linked with moves to the club in many a transfer window, so the 30-year old will be delighted it has finally happened.

Now for McCarthy, it is all about getting up to speed with those around him in the squad.

Yesterday, fans had a small glimpse of the midfielder and what he could offer, but there is likely even more to come as the season progresses.
