In an unexpected turn of events, Celtic midfielder, 33-year-old James McCarthy, was given a rare opportunity to play for the Celtic B side this past Saturday afternoon.

McCarthy, who has largely remained out of the first-team picture since coming to the club, started the game and played a significant 54 minutes in the fifth tier of Scottish football. However, his presence couldn’t steer the team to victory, as the Hoops succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against league leaders East Kilbride.

McCarthy’s journey with Celtic has been a rollercoaster since his arrival at the club during Ange Postecoglou’s tenure. Signed with high expectations, the Irish international struggled to find his place in the Australian manager’s plans. His compatibility with Postecoglou’s style remained a subject of much debate as to why he was even brought to the club.

The plot thickened with the arrival of Brendan Rodgers in the summer. Rodgers hinted to the fans that McCarthy’s time at the club might be nearing its end. This speculation led many to believe that an exit was imminent, yet the transfer window closed with McCarthy still a Celtic player.

Adding to the intrigue, McCarthy has been a notably absent figure in training sessions. His lack of presence fueled further speculation about his future at the club. This absence makes his sudden appearance for the B side even more curious. The match against East Kilbride wasn’t just a chance for McCarthy to get some much-needed game time; it was a rare public sighting of the player in a Celtic jersey.

Surely he exits the club in January.
