Celtic loanee Kwon Hyeok-kyu is excelling in his temporary spell in Paisley. Joining St. Mirren midway through January, the move came somewhat out of the blue.

Before joining the Saints, the South Korean was yet to make a competitive first-team appearance for the Hoops, managing just one start in a pre-season friendly with La Liga outfit Athletic Club. On that day, he in no way captured the imagination, being hooked at half-time.

With the Buddies, however, Kwon seems to have gained a new lease of life. He is playing consistently and at the weekend, he started and stood out once more as his side secured a more than impressive 3-0 win over Hibernian at Easter Road.

The imposing 22-year-old ran the show in the middle of the park for Stephen Robinson’s side, with the gaffer heavily praising the player post-match: “That was his best performance so far”, he said (Glasgow Times).

Kwon Hyok-kyu

“He understands what we want and he gives us real composure on the ball. But as his fitness levels increase, I think he’ll get better.

“You don’t pay £1m for players and they don’t have quality.”

Before he moved on loan to the SMISA Stadium, Kwon had not played competitive first-team football for a long while. It is a testament to his class that he has been thrown straight into a Premiership side and is already standing out.

Indeed, he has made a considerable impact so far, but there is a long way to go. St. Mirren are dreaming of Europe next season and Kwon could well help them get there, but as of the summer, he will return to Glasgow’s east end.

Should he keep up his standout St. Mirren performances, Kwon will most definitely be given an opportunity. His attributes are dissimilar to what any Celtic midfielder currently offers but at the minute, his focus must remain on performing in his loan. After that, his chance with the Hoops will come.

  1. I am wondering if BR actually knows who is worth keeping.
Vata, now Kwon, where does this end? BR is the gaffer and if he is in doubt, his coaching team should be shouting loud and clear to look at the players. Rogers for me is treading water, I am sick and tired of his comments and the staff we are disposing of!
