New Celtic signing Maik Nawrocki missed out on Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves in Dublin. Many were surprised not to see the Pole in the squad although the reason for his absence has now been revealed.

As of Hoops gaffer Brendan Rodgers, Nawrocki wasn’t available due to a small injury he picked up prior to joining Celtic. Rodgers said (The Scottish Sun): “Maik tweaked his ankle before he trained with us. But hopefully he’ll be okay for Tuesday.”

Stephen Welsh and Liam Scales began at centre back for the Hoops on Saturday. It is fair to say both players are not first choice and that Nawrocki would be closer to starting if he was fit than either of them. Having the 22-year-old available and ready to make his debut for the champions on Tuesday is only positive.

Many will be keeping a close eye on Nawrocki against Athletic Club. He has all the credentials to succeed but, rightly or wrongly, first impressions last a while. Tuesday is a big night for the young defender.
