It has always been assumed that Scott Sinclair is one of Celtic’s highest earners. The player came into the club from Aston Villa in what was considered a coup at the time by Brendan Rodgers.

To pay for a player who gave us so much, doesn’t come cheap but the figure in today’s Sunsport surely can’t be correct.

The paper claims the Englishman is on a whopping £40,000pw at the club and continues to take that home while not playing.

SunSport writes: “The £40,000-a-week star was allowed to fly back from the club’s winter training camp in Dubai to thrash out his future.”

Celtic have been very strict with their wages over the years and they have a ceiling they simply won’t go above. Back in the day, Henrik Larsson’s contract was rumoured to be around £42,000pw but that was a notable exception.

Even with inflation, we can’t see anyone at the club sanctioning that amount for Scott Sinclair back in 2016.

The real figure would likely be in the £30kish region. In any case, it’s a lot of cash to be spending on a player who is sitting idle in the stands.

The aforementioned SunSport article claims the player is close to a move to Preston.
