MIKAEL LUSTIG announced on Wednesday evening he would be leaving the club after eight trophy-laden years.

The Swede bowed out at Hampden giving the assist to Odsonne Edouard to send the team on their way to a historical treble treble.

There was a lot of speculation surrounding his deal and if Celtic would pick up the extra year on his contract which would just continue his current terms. The club chose to try and renegotiate a deal with the player and his reps but they could not come to a new agreement.

To this point, there hasn’t been much talk about what went wrong in the negotiations but RecordSport are reporting the deal fell through on one major issue.

‘Record Sport understands Lustig was looking for a three-year deal but the club, given his age, were prepared only to offer a one-year extension.’

So it looks like the players time has ended because the club would not sanction the longer deal. It was no secret Neil Lennon wanted to keep the defender at the club but Mikael was obviously looking for longer term security and perhaps a shot at ten in a row.

We wish the player all the best!
