Former Celtic gaffer and club legend Neil Lennon wants to get back into management. The man who led the Hoops to nine-in-a-row and the quadruple treble has admitted that he is getting itchy feet.

Lennon, who was recently linked with the Republic of Ireland managerial job, has turned his attention to the North East and in particular Aberdeen.

Neil Warnock is currently in interim charge of the Dons but the club will be looking for a permanent successor to former Celt Barry Robson come the summer. Indeed, Lennon has thrown his name into the hat: “The Aberdeen job is something that I would be very much interested in, no question”, he said (The Celtic Way).

“I think there is great potential at Aberdeen.”

To see Lennon back managing a team in Scotland that is not Celtic would be a strange sight for some supporters. The 52-year-old, however, did take charge of Hibs a few years back before returning to Glasgow’s east end.

His second Celtic spell ended in disaster but Lennon insists his prior achievements shouldn’t be forgotten: “I do think there is a perception of me that is wrong”, quipped the former Hoops skipper.

“I have achieved a lot in the game – titles, trebles and Champions League. I even went abroad and won a trophy and got that team into the Europa League.

“I have also got real experience. People forget I got the Celtic job when I was very young. I was appointed the Celtic manager around 15 years ago and some people think I am getting on a bit but I still have plenty of energy.”

A divisive figure within Scottish football, Lennon would undoubtedly bring added entertainment to the Premiership if he does take up the Aberdeen job. He is one of the best candidates Dave Cormack and Co. could appoint, at least in terms of track record and experience.

There is a long way to go yet until the Dons bring in a new permanent gaffer, but Lennon publically stating his interest in the job at this point in time is notable.
