NEIL LENNON was asked about the younger players at Lennoxtown during his Friday press conference this week.

Many fans have bemoaned the lack of game time for young players to see if they have what it takes to come in and challenge for a place. The whole reason being now, the league is all but over and it would be great to bring some of these bhoys through to give us a gauge on what we can get out of them next season.

Stephen Welsh was the example given by one journalist and Neil Lennon praised the young defender:

“He’s a good player, he’s taken his chance very well, a good professional, no fuss and he loves the club” The Hoops gaffer told CELTICTV.

“He can be delighted with his contribution.”

Asked about any other players and if they would get a chance in the not too distant future, Neil was more cautious but did have praise for some of the players potentially coming through,

“We have got a couple of good young players underneath who are here currently, and we’re really pleased with their progress so far

“It depends on the situation, whether it’s too soon for them or not.

“We’re pleased with the progress they’re making, we don’t want to build them up to much or rush them too much”

Celtic have had some good young players who could have perhaps made the step up this season but there has been an over-reliance on the old guard and Neil Lennon has never been a manager who gives youth a chance over the piece.

It still remains to be seen who will be here come the summer. We know there are young players spoiling to move on because they don’t see a path to the first team. Would they be inclined to stay if a new manager came in?
