GREEK goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas is set to leave Celtic on a free transfer, marking the end of an underwhelming stint with the Scottish champions, according to reports from Greece.

Barkas joined Celtic from AEK Athens and Super League 1 three summers ago in what was the most expensive goalkeeper deal in Scottish history at the time. However, his time at Celtic did not unfold as he would have hoped.

Despite the high expectations that accompanied his arrival, Barkas struggled to establish a strong rapport with the team. The situation became more challenging with the arrival of Joe Hart, which saw Barkas fall further down the pecking order.

Fortunately, a loan spell at Utrecht this year, where the Dutch club paid 50% of his wages, allowed Barkas to regain some competitive action after a year of inactivity.

According to Sportime, Barkas, who recently turned 29, has reached an agreement with Celtic to terminate his contract. This move will save Celtic the remaining £500,000 in the final year of his contract, with the Goalkeeper leaving on a free.

There were reports a few weeks ago that suggested Barkas had racked up some interest with his performances, and teams were willing to pay for him. So, it’s quite surprising to read that the goalie could be walking away for free this summer.

Despite his difficulties at Celtic, Barkas is eager to continue his career abroad. While his next destination is not yet confirmed, it is unlikely to be in Greece.
