Celtic centre-back Stephen Welsh has penned a brand new four-year contract with the club.

The treble-winning defender has committed his long-term future to the Hoops, which is only positive.

At the champions since he was a boy, Welsh is Celtic through and through. He knows the club inside out and the expectation that is on your shoulders when playing in hoops. Having players of his ilk around is crucial for any team.

As well as this, his confirmed presence for the next four years adds yet more depth to the centre of defence for Brendan Rodgers. Welsh is nothing but reliable and, at 23 years of age, has already made over 50 first-team appearances for Celtic.

The Scotland Youth international already has a wealth of experience and will only improve as the years transpire. He is still young, and in the future, if he continually develops, he could turn out to be a big player for the club.

Yet another positive of Welsh signing a new deal is that he counts towards Celtic’s homegrown quota for Europe. In their squads for European competitions, every team needs a certain number of players who have been trained from a young age in the country where the team is based. Welsh fits this bill.

After signing a new deal, he may not play the biggest part for his side over the season, but Welsh will most certainly contribute. Rodgers has faith in him, and he is a more than reliable asset to have around.
