Stan Petrov has claimed that the lack of game time for Aaron Mooy led to his mistakes in today’s defeat in Paisley.

The midfielder was picked up for free by Celtic in the summer window after he was released from his previous contract. He’s mainly featured for Celtic after the game has slowed down, sits in a deep position, and does the simple things well.

Today, Mooy was given the nod from the start. It wasn’t the wrong call from the manager, he’d shown no signs that he’d struggle to play from the start in a league game, but he just wasn’t at it.

Petrov believes the Australian midfielder is at fault for the first goal, stating it was Mooy’s man who found himself free at the back post, with Mooy seconds behind him. [The Sun]

“With Celtic we talk about those changes. The attitude when you don’t play regularly, Aaron Mooy, that was his man.

“If he doesn’t usually play, he isn’t on the field all the time, then you get sloppier.

“You don’t track runners, you do the right things you do, especially off the ball.

“Today St Mirren were more aggressive on the front foot.

“They were putting the ball in the right areas, and when they had it in the right areas, there were plenty of bodies there to attack it.”

Stylian has a point; watching the game, you saw Mooy half-heartedly track back and allow his runner to get a massive advantage.

It’s easy to point the figure at individuals, but the fact of the matter is that the team wasn’t good enough today.
