As the transfer window closed on a quiet day for many clubs, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his thoughts on the importance of doing business early in the month of January.

While Ange concedes some fans may have been disappointed with the lack of excitement on transfer deadline day, the manager believes that bringing players in early has a lot of benefits.

As far as the Australian is concerned waiting until the last minute to make transfers doesn’t make sense, especially with the big games that take place in January in Scotland.

He feels that doing business early in the month can give teams an extra month of football for the new additions to contribute in, and prevent the need for scrambling last minute.

While the manager acknowledges that early transfer activity may not always be possible, he believes that it is a strategy that made a lot of sense for his team in the January.

Asked if this was all the strategy, Ange told SunSport: “Yeah, I think so.

“There’s probably a little section of our supporters a little bit disappointed there wasn’t any excitement, I probably deflated a few people.

“But I just think I don’t know why people wait to the last minute, it doesn’t make sense to me.

“In January there’s a whole month of football, especially here in Scotland there’s some pretty big games, and they have been big games for us.

“If we could do business early I thought it made sense and there were a couple of markets where we could early in.

“It just worked well for us. I don’t think it’s always going to happen that way because it depends on where you’re looking.

“I just think for January especially it makes a lot of sense to bring guys in early. You get the extra benefit of an extra month of football they can contribute in, and you don’t have to scramble last minute.”

It certainly paid dividends last season when Reo Hatate and Maeda came in and made an instant impact. This year, the team is more settled and the new bhoys are having to wait for their chance. Alistair Johnston being the exception due to Celtic selling Josip Juranovic and Anthony Ralston being out injured.

As for a section of the support being disappointed with no late drama, we haven’t witnessed any discontent. For once, there wasn’t much happening and Celtic fans seemed happy enough.

There have been windows when we’re still rushing around looking for players until midnight on deadline day, while it might provide some excitement, it rarely works out.
