Academy graduate Mikey Johnston has had a difficult time over the past 18 months or so with several injury issues, which have hindered his playing time.

The young winger is slowly starting to make his return to the side, coming off the bench for a third consecutive game on Saturday to play the final half an hour in the 2-0 win over St Johnstone.

Despite it just being brief cameos, the Celtic support and Ange Postecoglou alike have been impressed with the performances of Johnston, who has looked sharp in his short spells on the pitch.

This has also left the 56-year old excited to see what Johnston can bring to his side, as he tipped the Scotland under-21 internationalist to have a ‘huge impact’ in the side after making his return.

“I was really pleased to see Mikey back because he looked really good in pre-season,” Ange said, as quoted by Sun Sport.

“I know how talented he is, but the key for him was to get his body healthy and to be really patient with him. He’s a talented player, and he’s now getting more game time.

“The way we play, I know he can have a huge impact for us; he just needs to stay healthy and keep improving his game. Hopefully, James Forrest is not too far away either.

“From that point of view, it’s certainly helpful to have these guys because we are going to need a strong squad.”

Since coming through the academy into the side under Brendan Rodgers back in 2017, many fans have been left excited with the wingers potential.

That excitement has come with plenty of frustration, though, due to Johnston’s recent injury record – which you can imagine will have frustrated him just as much.

From here, it is about trying to get a consistent run of minutes on the pitch as he looks to make his way into Postecoglou’s thinking for a possible option to start during another busy winter period for the Hoops.
