Respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has poured cold water over the notion Celtic could sign Rafa Benitez as the next Celtic manager this summer.

The bookies have the Spaniard at relatively short odds to and is in the top five leading candidates but when he was asked if Celtic was a possibility for his countryman, Balague believes its Rafa’s wish to stay in the English Premier League.

When asked on his Youtube channel if the Celtic job would interest Rafa, Balague said:

“The priority is to stay at Newcastle,”

“The kind of offers that he got, which are like €10million net a year, come from Saudi Arabia and from China which I don’t think are the places he should go next.

“The battle is to stay at Newcastle, if he gets enough support.

“If he doesn’t stay at Newcastle I think the Premier League will be the competition he would like to stay in. I think that will be the target.”

Celtic are seemingly no closer to appointing a full time boss with Neil Lennon in limbo at the moment. A lot of Celtic fans would like to see a fresh approach by the club and want Peter Lawwell and Dermot Desmond to come up with an inspired choice for the next Celtic boss.

Benitez would certainly be an inspired choice but there’s just no feasible way Celtic are going to be able to land the Spaniard. He is a very demanding manager who always looks to push the board he works under. Not something Peter would enjoy.

  1. Give the job to Neil Lennon along with the financial backing that he will obviously need to strengthen a squad that needs a lot spent on it.
We have the cash so spend it.Any money invested in the team will be recovered by merchandise sales which will rocket exponentially when we achieve ten in a row.
Wouldn’t be a bad idea to get Steve Clarke in as a defensive coach and give John Kennedy another position at the club.HH
