In the midst of a season where every match feels just as important, the conversation around Reo Hatate’s return to the pitch is buzzing through the stands and social media.

Brendan Rodgers, with his eyes firmly set on the challenges ahead, has offered a tantalising glimpse into what might be a significant comeback for the dynamic Japanese midfielder.

Asked if he could see the Glasgow Derby, Rodgers did not rule it out:

“Reo has been on the grass, working well. He looks strong and fit but we’ll have to assess it and weigh up the risk because it’s a key one for us,” Rodgers told RecordSport, hinting at the careful consideration being given to Hatate’s potential return. His words, cautious yet optimistic, reflect the delicate balance of hope and strategy that defines the mid-season grind.

Rodgers didn’t hold back on emphasising Hatate’s impact, stating, “Certainly, for the second half of the season it’ll be huge for us because he’s such an instrumental player for us. The dynamic he gives the team is fantastic and he hasn’t featured much.” The sentiment among the faithful is a mix of anticipation and longing, as they remember the energy and pace Hatate brings to the game, transforming the team’s rhythm and attack.

“But I know from one of the games he played in, the whole speed of the game was different with Reo playing. The tempo and intensity he brings is what we’re all about,” Rodgers added, painting a vivid picture of the swift, incisive play that’s been missing. It’s a reminder of the style and spirit that fans crave, the Celtic way that’s both a legacy and a promise.

The prospect of Hatate’s return isn’t the only thing on the Celtic manager’s mind. He remarked, “When we get him back, it will be like a new signing for us. Liel is getting there as well.” The inclusion of Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda in the conversation points to a broader vision of a squad revitalized by speed and skill, a team reinvigorated for the second half of the season.

“We got Daizen Maeda back today as well. For the game we want to play, football looks different with players who have profile and speed. That’s how this team has been built. When you take it out, that penetration, you miss it,” Rodgers explained. The emphasis on speed and penetration reflects a tactical philosophy deeply ingrained in the Celtic ethos, a commitment to a brand of football that’s both beautiful and effective.

“Daizen has that and it’s great to have him back. Abada will also do it. And we’ll see what we can do in January to increase that,” Rodgers concluded, leaving a hint of further enhancements come the transfer window.

As Celtic secured a victory against Livingston, the potential of these players returning and joining forces isn’t just a boost for the team, it feels like we’re turning a corner.

Before the Glasgow derby game, we visit Dundee on Boxing Day.
