As the clock ticks closer to the SPFL transfer deadline on Friday, 1st September, at midnight, Celtic are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to provide manager Brendan Rodgers with the tools he needs for a successful season. With the highly-anticipated Glasgow derby just two days after the window closes, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

One name that has been making the rounds in the Celtic rumour mill is Bologna striker Sydney van Hooijdonk. The 23-year-old forward, who is the son of Hoops icon Pierre van Hooijdonk, has had an impressive run in Serie A and could be a valuable addition to Rodgers’ attacking options.

However, Celtic are not alone in their pursuit of the young talent. Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph reports that Bundesliga side Wolfsburg have made initial contact with Bologna for van Hooijdonk. The German club’s interest could potentially drive up the price or even hijack the deal altogether, adding an extra layer of urgency to Celtic’s efforts.

Sydney van Hooijdonk’s future remains uncertain as both Celtic and Wolfsburg weigh their options. Given his lineage and the emotional connection to the Hoops, a move to Celtic Park would be a poetic chapter in the van Hooijdonk saga. But as we all know, sentimentality won’t win titles; Rodgers will be looking at how Sydney can fit into his tactical plans and whether he can deliver when it matters most—especially in the looming Glasgow derby.

Pierre was part of the iconic three amigos alongside Paulo Di Canio and Jorge Cadete. A pay dispute with the clubs hierarchy would end his time at Celtic, but he’s fondly remembered in retrospect.

With the SPFL deadline fast approaching, Celtic are very active in the market, and fans are eagerly awaiting news of new signings. Adding Sydney van Hooijdonk could be a masterstroke by Rodgers. But time is of the essence, and the Hoops will need to act swiftly to secure their targets.

Celtic supporters will be keeping their eyes peeled and their fingers crossed as the drama unfolds. One thing is for sure: the coming days leading up to 1st September are set to be a rollercoaster of emotions and expectations.

  1. Before today, I had never heard of Sydney van Hooijdonk, so he’s not exactly setting the heather on fire. Maybe the Board think his name will fool the fans into believing that he is automatic quality, like his father. They’re scraping the bottom of the barrel now, linked with van Hooijdonk, Paulo Bernardo, Kvistgaarden and other unheard ofs when they should be out there doing serious deals for serious quality. It’s absolutely disgraceful and I can see Rodgers walking away very soon. Who could blame him? He’s being stiffed by Lawwell again.
