This follows the news that Arsenal has been pursuing Ajax defender Jurrien Timber. With a potential deal for Timber potentially exceeding £40 million, Holding’s move appears to be more a strategic shift for the Gunners than a dismissal of the defender’s abilities.

Celtic are likely looking to add a few bodies to their defence in the summer, with Holding’s name mentioned. However, the scales have tipped in favour of Besiktas, who now stand as front-runners in the race for the 27-year-old’s services.

Holding’s contract with Arsenal has just a year remaining, with the option to extend for another year.

It’s hard to gauge just how serious Celtic’s interest in the defender was, but there will be plenty of other players available to the club, if he was under serious consideration.
