Let’s be honest, the world of football hardly batted an eyelid when Hearts asked their players to take a voluntary 50% wage cut a few weeks back to cope with the loss of revenue from the Coronavirus. In fact, it was met by some quarters with disdain. Kris Boyd didn’t mind putting the boot into Hearts when the suggestion was made.
We wonder what the helpless pundit will say to Messi and Ronaldo as European giants Juve and Barca’s players agree to wage cuts. Juve has just released the following statement stating all their players and staff have agreed to a four-month wage cut.
“Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that, due to the current global health emergency is preventing the performance of the sporting activity, it has reached an understanding with the players and the coach of the First Team regarding their compensation for the residual portion of the current sport season,” the statement read.
“The understanding provides for the reduction of the compensation for an amount equal to the monthly payments of March, April, May and June 2020. In the coming weeks, personal agreements with the players and the coach will be finalised, as required by the current regulations.
The agreement is set to save the Italian club around 90m euros for the next four months. Italy and Spain have been hit the hardest in Europe by the Coronavirus with a combined death toll of 16,000 citizens.
With the likes of Barca, Juve, Athletico, Dortmund, & Bayern all announced cuts to wages how many more clubs will follow suit? With the big powerhouses of European football making changes it might make it less stressful now for other clubs to do the same without been slagged off by the likes of Kris Boyd.
