Scott Brown is reportedly in contention for the managerial position at Sunderland, following the recent dismissal of Tony Mowbray.

According to Record Sport, sources in Sunderland have confirmed that Brown has expressed interest in the vacancy at the Stadium of Light. The 38-year-old’s entry into the running introduces an intriguing dynamic, as he joins a list of potential candidates that includes ex-Rangers boss Michael Beale and current Ibrox coach Alex Rae.

Brown’s managerial stint at Fleetwood Town was notable, as he successfully steered the club away from relegation and led them to a historic FA Cup fifth-round appearance. However, his tenure ended earlier this season after a poor run of form.

Since leaving Fleetwood, Brown has been linked with various roles in both north and south of the border, with a link to a job in Iceland also emerging, as he seeks to further his managerial career.

The opportunity at Sunderland, a club with aspirations of climbing back to the top tiers of English football, appears to be a particularly appealing challenge for him.

The managerial vacancy at Sunderland comes in the wake of Mowbray’s departure, with the team currently positioned 9th in the Championship table. Brown, who had a brush with Mowbray during the latter’s tenure at Celtic, sees this as an opportunity to influence the club’s trajectory positively.

Mowbray’s history with Brown dates back to January 2010, when he instructed Brown to find a new club, only to lose his job shortly thereafter. Brown, in contrast, went on to captain Celtic for 11 years, contributing significantly to their domestic success.
