After drawn out contract negotiations finally leading to a 2-year bumper deal for Scottish internationalist, Stuart Armstrong, the Celtic support have broken into a debate over whether or not the Celtic higher-ups should allow the central midfielder to leave or not.

Rumours of interest in Armstrong over the summer transfer window have been in full force, prompting this discussion amongst Celtic fans and Scottish football connoisseurs as to whether Celtic should cash in on the player or not.  With Armstrong, after long winded contract negotiations, eventually signing a two-year deal for the Bhoys, it is believed by much of the support that the relatively short contract is an indication that he will be sold next summer at the very earliest – maybe even January.

With the successes of Wanyama, Forster and Van Dijk to name a few, it’s easy to see why Armstrong may have been reluctant to sign a long-term contract, especially with Southampton rumored to be heavily interested in his signature.

The fiercer competition teamed with the higher wages he would no doubt receive makes the switch a tempting offer for the 25-year-old central midfielder.  The transfer fee most recently rumored would suggest he would not be leaving Parkhead for any less than £8 million.  With Van Dijk being valued by many at £40 million+ it is more than likely that Celtic would be unwilling to sell without a decent sell-on clause to ensure Celtic will benefit from the deal in the future.

In addition, the signing of 21-year-old central midfielder Olivier Ntcham for £4.5 million so far proving to be a great piece of business would give hope to supporters that if Armstrong was to leave and the transfer fee was to be added directly to Rodgers’ transfer budget that he would continue to bring in young, promising, talented players.

With other options at central midfield including the likes of captain Scott Brown, Callum Mcgregor, Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic, some fans may believe this to be the optimal time to cash in on the player whilst other options exist within the squad.

Leave your thoughts below on whether or not you feel Celtic would be getting the better of the deal should Armstrong leave for a fee in the range of £8-10 million or whether you feel he should be valued higher or lower.

  1. 50 years of following Celtic has taught me one thing…
No one is bigger than the Club.
If he wants to go…let him.
    He’s a very good player…but we’ll survive.
    Onwards and upwards Celtic.

  2. He’s signed a new contract, regardless of the term , he’s committed to us for next two seasons , he has his best years ahead of him and I for one hope it’s with us , we shall see , but talk of selling him isn’t what we need . And ntcham is younger and still got a lot to prove which hopefully he will do in time when he fully settles in with us

  3. ntcham has a better range of passing from mid than stuey, and has better game intel,if stuey wants to leave then 8-10 million is the going rate for his developing age with euro experience,if how ever he has a fantastic cl then who know he could go for 15 mill, but at the end of the day it’s where the player himself sees where he want’s to play fitbaw,if that is not with celtic, he should spill and let the club get commensurate sponndies for him…….at the end of the day if he leaves i will wish him well..and if he stays i will hope he produces on the park for the mightiest of clubs,The Glasgow Celtic….Hail Hail

  4. I like him a lot as a player. That said he’s not a Celtic bhoy at heart. He likes playing for the winning team, who doesn’t? But I’m not convinced his heart is in it. If Brendan Rodgers isn’t convinced of his long term committment then he should be on his way. He has a whole lot more to lose professionally than we have. He might see the glittering prize of the EPL mad money, but if thats the case and he can’t get by on £20 grand a week, leave him off.

  5. The Bhoy has a gr8 engine and he can score..Lovely player and will get better but if he wants tae go then sell him which I think is the plan..If we get 8-10 mil fur um? put that towards buyin wee Paddy next summer…

  6. Aye that was a player who is not committed to the club that just opened the scoring, I’m sure he wouldn’t have been too bothered if it went by the post instead of in the net ! Get a grip you Armstrong haters !

  7. No disputing Armstrong is a Decent Footballer BUT the length of time it took him just to literally sign a 12 month extension. That in itself tells me,Exactly what his intentions are,He isnt a Bhoy at heart. He wont be at the Best Club for long.Im sure he thinks his Value is way more than his Talent.HH ..Congrats to Sevco in fighting for a draw against the mighty Killie.
