It had been reported that Celtic had identified Benjamin Siegrist as a replacement to Vasilis Barkas and had placed the out of contract goalie high on their target list.

Now, Scott Burns of the Daily Record has confirmed that Celtic have opened talks with the goalkeeper, making an official approach for the player.

To sign the goalkeeper, Celtic will need to see off Preston North End and Blackpool, who are also said to be interested in bringing the Swiss player to their club.

However, the big question is whether Siegrist will be content in being a backup keeper. For Celtic, it would also signal that Ange doesn’t rate Scott Bain too highly; bringing in a quality keeper like the former Dundee United man would suggest that the Scottish goalkeeper would move down the pecking order.

He’s great cover to have at the club, but at the age of 30, he may want to chase first-team football rather than be a backup option.
