Celtic youngster Stephen Welsh has reserved praise for fellow defender Shane Duffy for helping him in his development since breaking into the side.

As quoted by the Daily Record, despite Duffy’s criticism this season, Welsh was very complimentary of the Irishman and how he has helped him since breaking into the side. The 20-year old also insisted that they aren’t direct rivals when it comes to the place in the side.

“Shane is one of the more experienced players in the team. He’s an international player who has played at the highest level and every day he is chatting away about what you can do better and what you are good at.

“He has helped me a lot.

“I wouldn’t say we are direct rivals. There’s competition in every position, especially at a team like this.

“Everyone is fighting for their position, so it doesn’t matter who plays every week.

“Shane, being an experienced player and me being younger, he does his best to help. His character is unbelievable.

“There is no doubt every player goes through a difficult spell and everyone has had it at this club.

“He’s got the character to come through the other end though. There’s no doubt in my mind about that.”

For all that Duffy has been poor on the pitch this season, with his experience it can be good for players like Welsh to learn even the smallest details off of him.

Recently Welsh has come in and taken Duffy’s place and impressed in the side ever since.

The young defender looks like he could have a big future at the club and this spell of games until the end of the season could be crucial for that with all but nothing to play for this season, allowing him to settle into the side more and earn some experience alongside the likes of Duffy and Kristoffer Ajer.
