Former Hibernian striker turned Scottish football pundit Tam McManus has spoken out against Celtic and Rangers.

With Celtic and Rangers both winning 2-1 this afternoon against Dundee and St. Mirren, McManus was highly critical of both sides of the Glasgow divide.

McManus does not give a set year for when to compare this current Celtic side, but to say ‘for a long time’ is questionable, considering that the current side is top of the league table with just four matches remaining and still in contention to win the Scottish Cup.

With Celtic having lost the league title by 25 points in the 2020/21 league season and failing to win a domestic trophy that season, Ange Postecoglou oversaw arguably the biggest rebuild in the club’s history.

While Rodgers took over a treble-winning team from last season, it is fair to say that the Irishman has not hit the heights of last season under Postecoglou, but the current team is nowhere near as poor as the 2020/21 side.

With Rodgers also masterminding Celtic’s first win in the Champions League group stage this season in over a decade, the Hoops were only a win away from European football after Christmas, in yet another sign that this is not the poorest Celtic side in a long time.

McManus appears to be using criticism of Celtic and Rangers as an opportunity to receive media attention and to discuss his name instead of actually providing any sort of real insight into how he feels Celtic or Rangers could improve as a team.

  1. He’s not wrong. It’s not a great Celtic side, one of our worst in the last 15 years or so. Even during the COVID season, individually, players like Ajer, Edouard etc, raised them above this current side. Huge rebuild required.

  2. Not as poor as the COVID season imho… Recruitment is key this year – if we signed 4/5 experienced players in the right positions they might lift the younger players in the squad. However, I have absolutely zero faith in the board to have a strategy never mind an ounce of ambition to push the boat out. Haggling over fees in January when we desperately needed reinforcements (with ££££ in the bank) is criminal. That, and successive experiments with moneyball has put us where we are. Needs to be a change from the top down or the lawyers and accountants will continue the managed decline.

  3. Who cares whit he says, come the 18th May I won’t give a flying fuck about how “poor” we are that’s for the summer.

Now this week, the SMSM will have Hearts the best football playing team in Europe with us petrified of them, they’ve had a decent season and have a good player in Shankland however this is the game I think we’ll see this Celtic team really kick in for the finishing line……
