Journalist Bill Leckie has hit the nail on the head when it comes to both Glasgow clubs participation in the Champions League this season.

There have been some who want to make the lazy and wildly misleading comparison about both not being up to scratch in Europe’s elite competition.

In reality, we had one club (Celtic) competing in every tie they’ve been in. Sometimes they’ve been unlucky, other times they’re lack of ruthlessness has come back to haunt them.

On the other side of the coin, The Rangers have been a complete and unmitigated disaster in Europe. Not able to compete at all and are hurtling towards some pretty embarrassing Champions League stats.

While they outcome for both sides is the same. There is one support base who sees progress from their side, while the other sees a team who will need ripped up in order to compete in future.

Leckie wrote in his SunSport Column:

“For me, that’s the difference between them and Celtic in Europe this season – the fact that while Hoops punters might be gutted at finishing bottom, at least they CAN be satisfied with how much Ange Postecoglou’s side put into the task.

“Celtic ran themselves to a standstill and it turned out they weren’t quite good enough.

“Too often, Rangers were simply AT a standstill.

“And that isn’t nearly good enough”

If you argue with that assessment then you either don’t know football or your simply biased. If you’re a Gers fan reading those quotes, you’ll probably want to deride and make the plastic comparison about both finishing last.

Back in reality though, there’s one team on the ascendancy and one team who could be doing with another season with fans being locked out the stadium.
