Ex Celtic player Shaun Maloney has fired a word of warning to out of favour and out of shape striker Leigh Griffiths. The ex-Scotland international has warned Griffiths that he might have opened the door for other strikers and if they take their chance Leigh could find himself stuck way down the pecking order.

As last season came to an unexpected halt, Griffiths had more or less pushed himself back into a starting place, he had linked up with Edouard to cause serious damage to opposition defenders and they had goals to prove it. His last game saw him walk away with a match ball as the forward looked set to play a big part in the quest for ten in a row as he continued to write his goal tally into Celtic’s history books.

Fast forward a few months later after a worldwide pandemic and the striker finds himself left behind in Scotland as his teammates travel to France for preseason action. Patryk Klimala breaks his duck for Celtic in front of goal but more importantly, he looks ready for the new season.

Maloney has warned Griff that his lack of fitness will pave the way for strikers just waiting for their chance and their success will leave Leigh in limbo.

“Klimala scored last night. He came in in January and he’s worked incredibly hard during the break. It’s another person’s opportunity. That’s what happens in team sports. Things don’t wait.” – The Scotsman

Leigh Griffiths has come back from much tougher situations than being out of shape but from the interview that Neil Lennon gave midweek, he has a serious fight on his hands to get back to first-team action and he probably needs a serious shift in his attitude to.
