Over the weekend, it was revealed that former Celtic winger Jota is set to depart Saudi Arabian champions Al-Ittihad, only a month after joining the club. The news came as a surprise to many, similar to the move itself.

An update has now been given on the Portuguese winger’s future post-Ittihad. On Twitter, transfer specialist Topskills Sports UK says that the club have confirmed to Jota he can leave as a free agent. It is also said in the Tweet that Serie A side Atalanta are interested in the 24-year-old:

If this news is indeed true and the flamboyant attacker is available for free, it would be foolish of Celtic not to ask the question.

Jota’s Saudi exit is speculated to be a result of the three foreign player rule in the Saudi league with the club looking at other players to join Benzema and Kante.

Brendan Rodgers’ team is in dire need of some quality in attack, and it is certain Jota would provide that.

It would be comical if the iconic winger came back to Glasgow. Next to no one of a Celtic persuasion would be against it although, at the minute, it doesn’t seem too likely. Never say never, though.

Jota made a significant impact during his time at the club. Initially joining on loan from Benfica at the end of the 2021 summer transfer window, Jota quickly endeared himself to the Celtic faithful with his pace, skill, and ability. His performances were crucial in helping Celtic rebuild under Ange Postecoglou.

In July 2022, Jota agreed to a permanent deal with Celtic for £6.3m, with a 30% sell-on clause. He continued to impress on the field, showcasing his dribbling ability, crossing, and goal-scoring prowess. Jota’s performances included key goals against The Rangers and a stunning free kick against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, although the result itself was not good enough.

Jota’s rapport with the fans was exceptional, and he became one of the most popular Celtic players in recent memory. However, in June 2023, he was linked with a move to the Saudi League, with a reported salary of £10m tax-free annually and an estimated transfer fee of €30m. It was a big blow to Celtic who are still trying to replace him. To see him treated like a throw away player is disheartening. But the money involved in Saudi football means the outlay for the player is a drop in the ocean.
