BRENDAN RODGERS has vented a bit after learning John McGinn could be Set to sign for Aston Villa.

The Irishman has admitted the club ave yet to replace two key players in Armstrong and Roberts which would be the ‘bare minimum’ with regards to transfers.

So far the Celtic bird have only landed Odsonne Edouard on a permanent deal – although it broke Celtic’s transfer record the fee was cushioned by the large price received for Armstrong.

The club are heading into the third Champions League qualifying round, still waiting on new faces and the news John McGinn is in England to thrash out of deal with Aston Villa hasn’t gone down well with the manager.

“He’s a player from a few months back I was really interested in. When you don’t complete a deal it opens the door for other teams… we’ve lost players, the bare minimum is to replace them

“We lost Stuart Armstrong and haven’t got a replacement yet. Patrick Roberts has gone out and we haven’t got a replacement yet…our job this year was pretty straight forward in terms of bringing players in. We only wanted quality.”

  1. This is very serious. Rodgers knows that Celtic need strengthening if they are to compete at Champions League level. The squad is weaker than last year when we leaked 18 goals in the group stages and only scored 5. Neither the club, nor the manager, can take the reputational hit of a repetition this season. Rodgers has dropped a number of hints that he is far from happy. You can imagine what he is saying behind the scenes. While nobody believes that Celtic can compete financially with the EPL, and that a degree of prudence is necessary, it is simply not credible that Celtic cannot afford to spend somewhat more on fees and salaries. While it is not a pleasant prospect to contemplate, I cannot see Rodgers still being at the helm at the end of this season.

  2. If Celtic fail to sign John McGinn it will be a big mistake and will haunt us in years to come, their is something not right regarding our scouting and signing policy. In my opinion we only needed to sign three quality players Edouard was one Mcginn should have been the second and after that a quality defender.1 from 3 isn’t good enough, once again a hint of complacency stalks the boardroom at Celtic park.

  3. It’s not just McGinn it’s the recruitment and the responsibility squarely lays at the door of laxwell. I know who the fans will blame not just if we fall out of the Champions league but fall to add quality to the squad.. That is effectively a £100 million gamble by laxwell.

  4. It will not haunt us. Stop being so melodramatic. He’s a decent prospect and I would have liked to have signed him but if he chooses to go elsewhere we turn out attention to other targets. In the past i’m certain we’ve missed out on a lot better targets than John McGinn and none have haunted us that I’m aware of.

  5. John Mcginn is a young scottish international player, in the market Celtic shop in we will not be signing a world class midfielder, Mcginn is probably the best Scottish midfielder other than Scott Brown and has a long career in front of him.In my opinion it is clear Brendan Rogers rates him and if he ends up in England then i’m sure that within a year he will be well beyond our budget.

  6. Rodgers just said we’ve not done the bare minimum it’s nit good enough. We’re in a fabulous position financially to boos the squad but we do nothing, my worry would be injuries, dembele injured again and we were all sweating over Ntcham but thankful the should be fit, get some quality in Celtic and stop fucking about

  7. You can clearly see the frustration that BR feels. We all know Celtic have a history of not strengthening when in a position of strength and it looks like they are at it again. I don’t share the enthusiasm around McGinn but we definitely needed to add some quality to the defence, especially after what happened last year in the CL.

  8. If Lee Congerton and whoever is in that department are not up to the standards required, I’m afraid , no one is indispensable. Decisions will have to be made at the top. Get it sorted we are not financially hogtied. ???????
