On Sunday evening, Celtic transfer talk burst into life with the news the club were closing in on a deal for Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy.

The former Premier League midfielder ripped up his contract with Shanghai Port earlier this year and has been mulling over his options for quite some time.

Mooy and the current Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou know each other well from their days together in the Socceroos set up.

Fabrizio Romano has added to the transfer news tonight by claiming Celtic will sign the player this week and it will be a one-year deal with an option of a second.

If that news holds up, it’s a relatively straight forward good move by the club. Ange gets a player he rates highly but Celtic cover themselves if he doesn’t manage to make a breakthrough in tho the Hoops midfield.

We saw the club hand a long term deal to James McCarthy last summer. At the time it seemed suspect and now it appears even more silly.

We have to be clever about deals and getting Mooy in with the kind of experience he has, including playing in the Scottish game, it’s a no brainier.
