In recent times, the spotlight has been cast on Celtic’s goalkeeping situation. Stephen McGowan, the Mail Sport chief, has weighed in on the matter during a Press Box podcast, suggesting that the club might need to prioritise bringing in a new goalkeeper.
Joe Hart is entering his third season with Celtic. His influence, both on and off the pitch, has been undeniable. However, as time passes and age catches up, there are concerns about diminishing returns from the seasoned goalkeeper.
Brendan Rodgers faces a crucial decision. Should he bank on Hart for another year, or is it time to usher in a new era with a fresh face between the sticks? Perhaps, even if not a direct replacement, someone who can genuinely challenge Hart for the number one spot.
McGowan opined, “Joe Hart only has a year left anyway, so I’m sure that is part of our planning. I would have thought it’s become a bigger priority in the last two or three weeks, especially with one or two errors in pre-season.”
He further elaborated on a recent incident against Ross County, “Even the incident with his chest against Ross County last weekend wasn’t entirely his fault. I have to say, I thought it was a poor pass back from Anthony Ralston.”
There’s also the matter of Benjamin Siegrist, who, despite his potential, has had limited opportunities. “Apart from that, I believe Benjamin Siegrist wants to go out and get some first team football. He’s only played something like seven games since arriving. His agent is looking for a new opportunity for him, so there might be a vacancy for a goalkeeper soon.”
With Hart’s contract nearing its end, McGowan believes Celtic should aim high. “It would make sense for Celtic to aim high, especially with Joe Hart only having a year left.”
The future remains uncertain for Hart. “I’m not sure if Joe Hart will stay for the rest of the year. He might want to leave if he’s not the number one choice. But I think if Celtic can find a place for Siegriest to play first team football, they will likely bring in a goalkeeper who could be a strong challenger to Joe Hart.”
The coming weeks will be pivotal for Celtic’s goalkeeping department. Whether they stick with the tried and tested Hart or venture into new territories remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the fans and management will hope for a solution ensuring the club’s success on the field.
