Rafa Benitez is now available after leaving the Chinese super league side Dalian with immediate effect. It’s given way to Celtic fans dreaming about a blockbuster appointment.

When the job was up for grabs when Neil Lennon was just caretaker, Benitez name was mentioned — the Spaniard was at Newcastle at the time but it was widely accepted he would leave St James Park at the end of that season.

Rafa did leave, but he went to the Chinese Super League where you might be out of sight but your bank balance swells.

The former Liverpool boss was asked about the interest from Celtic after the fact and he did concede he was aware of the interest.

“I was aware of some interest but we didn’t have any official approach.” Benitez told RecordSport.

“I was still under contract at Newcastle so we couldn’t even consider this option.”

To think the Celtic board would sanction such an ambitious move after the last two years just seems pie in the sky.

There’s a slim chance of anything like that happening. Right now, we can’t even get them to make a definitive decision on what happens next.

The club have fallen silent and they’re only speaking up on social media for birthday well wishes.

  1. Ha ha. Your having a giraffe. Celtic struggled to afford Mon and St Brendans spending sprees. And they want to get someone who won a Big eared trophy from being 0-3 down against a good Ac Milan. Then who failed at Newcastle. Same support, bigger draw. And they struggled not to be religated from one of the most financially sound leagues on the planet. Dream on, they guy could go anywhere. Meh.
