A 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock helped Celtic strengthen their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership on Saturday afternoon. Brendan Rodgers was pleased with his side’s performance, but annoyed at the officials post-match.

In the lead-up to the visitors’ second goal, Greg Taylor looked to have been fouled although referee Matthew McDermid gave nothing. After the game, Rodgers admitted he was surprised the goal stood. He said (BBC Radio Scotland via Glasgow Times): “I do not think it was a goal. The referee did not see it, however, he has a fourth official and a VAR team that are assessing it. I am not sure where they were looking from. I hear they were looking from when the young guy played the ball out to their striker but the actual foul was before that.”

It was disappointing that the champions’ clean sheet was wiped because of a goal that on another day, may not have stood. As well as this, it was concerning to hear that VAR was only looking at the goal from when the pass before it was made because the foul was in the same phase of play.

On a more positive note, though, it didn’t affect the overall result of the match and the fact the Celts are seven and ten points clear of St. Mirren and Rangers respectively at the top of the table. Those sides face off against each other tomorrow in a match the Bhoys will be keeping a keen eye on.
