Celtic are due to play out their final game in this season’s Champions League group stage on Wednesday. Whatever the result midweek, it won’t have an impact on the Hoops’ overall European campaign.

For the Celts, the match is a ‘dead rubber’, although manager Brendan Rodgers wants to finish the group stage campaign on a high. He said (Glasgow Times): “Clearly, it’s one we need and want to take something from. It’s a real challenging level. We have shown in spells over the games that we can really compete. But it would be nice to get a complete performance in that competition, see if we can pick up a result.”

Last season in Europe’s premier club competition, the Scottish champions earned just two points. A win against Feyenoord on Wednesday would mean the Bhoys end this season’s campaign on double the points they did last campaign.

This will be a motivator for the Hoops, along with the money side of things. Rodgers said: “Nothing may be at stake, but every game is vital from a football perspective. Every point is a financial game for the club and pride is also there to play for.”

It remains to be seen whether the Parkhead gaffer will play many of his first-team stars against the Dutch champions. He wants to secure a result, but he may not want to risk some crucial players in a match that frankly doesn’t matter.
