Celtic captain Callum McGregor is getting set to return to action for the Scottish champions this weekend in the Hoops away match to Aberdeen.

The skipper has been out since early October after sustaining a knee injury in Celtic’s Champions League game against RB Leipzig in Germany.

It was testament to how far the Hoops have come under Ange Postecoglou as it would have been unthinkable to have McGregor out for so long but praise must be given to Matt O’Riley who took a step back into the pivot role.

He did suffer a serious facial injury last season, but returned back in dramatic fashion sporting a protective mask to face Rangers which appeared to really drive the team on in a 3-0 mauling of the Ibrox club.

Many will be of the opinion that the 29-year-old shouldn’t be rushed back to the first team but having returned to training in Sydney and played in the friendly against Rennes last weekend, the Hoops captain looks ready to go [Football Scotland].

Postecoglou will likely throw McGregor into the game at Pittodrie as they will expect a difficult game against a side who have been difficult to beat at home this season.

His presence in the team cannot be underestimated and he will play a key role in the coming weeks as Celtic navigate their way through another tough batch of fixtures.
