With Celtic having impressively won 3-0 away to Livingston on Sunday, few would have thought David Martindale would be in the headlines post-match.

It is difficult to get away, however, from the Livi boss’ comments in his interview with official club media after the game.

The manager spoke about how he thought his defence dealt with Celtic’s threat to a relatively successful extent, and that striker Tete Yengi caused the Hoops’ backline issues.

In his latter summation, it is hard to disagree with Martindale. The big Australian, particularly in the first half, ruffled a few feathers.

What was most puzzling about Martindale’s comments, however, was his naming of one of the Celtic defenders. He said: [@LiviFCOfficial on X] “There was a lot to be positive about.

“I thought Tete [Yengi] in the first half kept dropping in and it gave Carter-Vickers and John Stones an easy option, and they just went tight with him whereas the space was down the channels.”

Given he named Cameron Carter-Vickers immediately before, one assumes the Livi gaffer is referring to Liam Scales when he mentions Manchester City treble-winner and England internationalist John Stones.

Few know where such a comparison comes from because the pair are two completely different types of players.

Perhaps Martindale was making an early April Fools joke but unless he comments on the remark further, it will remain continually puzzling.
