CELTIC and their Glasgow rivals are set to find out next month if they will be granted permission to field a colt side in League 2 for the start of next season.

The proposal put forward would see League two expand to 16 teams with clubs from the Highland and Lowland League also being invited into the fold.

Celtic want a situation where they can have real, competitive football for their youth players who are currently sitting idle at Lennoxtown with very little to do.

The finalisation of a vote and the shape it will take will be put to the SPFL in April and by August the colt squads could be entered into the fourth tier of Scottish football.

Here are some of the vital parts of the proposal as reported by BBC Scotland:

  • Clubs in Leagues One and Two to benefit by at least £100,000 over five-year period
  • Loans of under-21 players between clubs can be increased from two (current) to five
  • B teams will be able to play in Challenge Cup but not the Scottish Cup or League Cup
  • B teams will have no voting rights and no rights to any distribution money
  • The only change to the financial model would be teams in first and second place in the Premiership, who would forego £290,000 for the first five seasons.

There is considerable push back to the Glasgow sides getting their B squads into the Scottish system, so there’s no guarantee this will be voted through.

It would have a massive impact on the way Celtic bring through their players and would give the club a chance to set out a team similar to how the first team operate and make the transition between the reserve side and first team side much more seamless.
