In perhaps the most drawn out farewell in the club’s history, Emilio Izaguirre finds himself out of contract this summer after saying his goodbyes LAST MAY.

The very popular left back seen the writing on the wall when Kieran Tierney had a standout season last term and was trying to amicably manoeuvre a move away from Celtic Park in search of first team football.

Sure enough on the last day of the season, Izzy hung back from the rest of the title winning team to do his own lap of honour and thank the fans for their support over the years, convinced that he was on the way out.

With Brendan Rodgers appointment and an injury a move never materialised and the Honduran international stayed with the club. Thankfully he did after a Kieran Tierney injury meant the cult hero got another run in the side. He deputised well in the absence of Celtic’s first choice left back and has faded back into the background now KT has picked up where he left off.

It’s a strange one, usually if a player is trying to get a move away from the club there is some ill-feeling from the support but I’ve never got that vibe from any supporter in Izzy’s case. A recognition of the efforts the defender has put in since 2010 along with an appreciation that he wants to play as much first team football as possible at the age of 30.

He’s not expected to sign a new deal with the Scottish Champions and we’re sure he won’t be short of offers come the end of May. If he’s definitely leaving this time, all we can do is wish him all the best and remind the wee man – Celtic loves you more than you will know.
