Justin Devenny has made a flying start to life at Stoke City after Celtic considered a move for the midfielder during the final days of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old was handed an immediate start against Charlton Athletic and responded with two goals in a convincing 4-0 victory.
Devenny opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 15 minutes before adding another later in the game, making it an impressive first appearance for his new club.
Celtic had looked at the Northern Ireland international as they searched for more midfield options late in the window.
His ability to operate in more than one role also made him an attractive option, with Devenny capable of playing centrally or on the left side.
That ultimately worked against Celtic.
Stoke were willing to commit to a permanent deal and secured Devenny for a reported fee of around £6million, ending any possibility of a move to Glasgow.
Celtic instead moved on with other targets as they completed a busy final period of the window.
Devenny’s move was one of several deals Celtic explored without getting over the line, but his early impact at Stoke will make his progress worth watching.
A two-goal debut does not determine whether Celtic were right or wrong to walk away from the deal, particularly given the difference between a loan and a permanent commitment.
But Stoke could hardly have asked for a better start from their new signing, while Celtic supporters will naturally keep an eye on how he develops after the club chose not to meet Palace’s preferred terms.
