CARL STARFELT put in a solid performance against The Rangers in Celtic’s 2-1 win, which enabled the team to place one hand on the trophy.

Despite the Swedish defender’s improvement and star performances since the end of last year, some fans haven’t taken to him yet.

He was thrown into the side that lost the season’s opening game. He never played well that day; I don’t think there is a fan that would argue against that. His performance made fans conclude that the player was a failure before his Parkhead career started.

However, towards the end of last year, Starfelt’s performances improved a lot after he returned from injury. The defender is now solid and is almost always successful when up against an attacker, and he was even in the man of the match conversation for a run of games.

He is now playing with confidence, driving forward with the ball into midfield, creating space for his teammates.

This couldn’t be achieved without his defensive partner Cameron Cater-Vickers. Together, they hold the best defensive record in the league.

Sunday’s result wouldn’t have been positive without the pair. The duo dealt with every ball that made its way into the box. In all honesty, Carl Starfelt is just as good as his defensive partner.

On Tuesday, the Celtic Twitter account revealed some impressive stats about the defender.

Andy Walker and Ally McCoist were full of praise for the defender, backtracking on their comments earlier in the season.

It’s time for Celtic fans to do the same who are still banging this particular drum. Starfelt is essential to the Celtic squad. Maintaining the partnership at the back heading into next season would be a massive boost.

Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers have never lost a league game they have started together.
