Watching our team’s heaviest-ever home defeat in a European match is never going to be easy.

Celtic lost 5-0 to a Paris St-Germain side which may well now go on to win the Champions League and become the first French side to lift the trophy since Marseille in 1993.

There were many disappointments on the night – obviously conceding five goals at home without reply. Leigh Griffith’s free-kick effort in the first half was brilliantly saved. A rather soft penalty award. Scoring one of their goals for them! Neymar’s familiar, yet un-necessary antics, diving and poor sportsmanship as usual. And the rain was rather annoying on the despondent journey home too.

However, to be let down by what appears to be a fellow Celtic ‘fan’ is adding insult to injury.

The pitch invasion by one idiot enraged many in the sell-out crowd. Thousands of us who had contributed to a fantastic atmosphere, which was being broadcast to millions worldwide. Viewers who had hopefully marveled at the sights and sounded just before kick-off, with an amazing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, followed by the fans’ obvious delight at the fantastic and spine-tingling Champions League Theme.

Those same viewers will also have witnessed this moron charge towards an opposition player, shortly after PSG’s 3rd goal, tarnishing the reputation of Celtic in one fell swoop. Hopefully, the indignation from the stands was apparent as this individual is not a true example of Celtic’s fabulous support. The club and the police will surely deal with this severely, and justice will be served.

Football is a game of stats, though, but this time there are some figures which are more ominous than the PSG pass ratio compared to Celtic’s.

In July, Celtic were fined over £20,000 after UEFA judged that an ‘illicit banner’ was displayed during our win over Linfield. This was our 11th punishment in SIX years, all relating to some form of misconduct by our fans during European ties. And it’s irrelevant if you agree or disagree with the UEFA rules. The fact is, we want to play in UEFA’s competitions, so let’s just abide by them!

Celtic fans have enjoyed an excellent reputation for many, many years – every accolade has been well-deserved, and other clubs and their fans have welcomed us because of this reputation. We cannot let this image be gradually chipped away – even if it is sometimes ‘just’ the one bad apple, we must not let our club become rotten to the core.
